  8. CRP payments mailed to participants
    Conservation Reserve Program participants in Kansas received $122,815,104 for 3,103,993 acres enrolled on 49,834 contracts, according to Adrian J. Polansky, state executive director of USDA’s Farm Service Agency.
    Across the country, participants received $1.7 billion on approximately 33 million acres.
    The Conservation Reserve Program is the largest public-private partnership for conservation and wildlife habitat in the United States. This voluntary program helps agricultural producers safeguard environmentally sensitive land.
    Producers enroll in long-term, resource-conserving covers to improve water quality, control soil erosion and enhance habitats for waterfowl and wildlife. In return USDA provides producers with annual rental and cost-share payments on 10- to 15-year contracts.

  9. BoRit one year later
    One year ago this week, the Environmental Protection Agency placed the BoRit asbestos site on its Superfund National Priority List, setting in motion a process that will have a long-term impact on the area.
    Sites on the NPL have "known releases or threatened releases of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants," according to the EPA's Web site.
    By placing the site on the NPL April 8, 2009, the EPA began efforts to remove immediate risks at the site and started a long-term analysis of it to determine a final solution for the asbestos contamination.
    The EPA’s action to address immediate risks, termed the removal stage, began last spring. The removal action has been divided into three phases, two of which have been completed with plans for the third being prepared.

    Interest in federal fire contracting work has increased dramatically this year as northern Nevada companies seek ways to boost revenues.
    A fire-contracting workshop in Carson City in 2009 drew about five participating businesses. Similar workshops in Reno and Carson City last week drew 10 times the number — about 50 participants between the two locations.
    With federal fire contracts running for three consecutive years, the potential fiscal impacts for northern Nevada businesses could be significant.
