  1. “Perfume Grass” Could Solve Problem of Antibiotics in Water Supply
Researchers at Michigan Tech use vetiver grass to remove antibiotics from waterResearchers at Michigan Technological University are on to a simple, low cost solution to the complicated problem of keeping antibiotics out of water supplies. In a study of vetiver grass grown in antibiotic-laden water, they found that 95.5% of the drugs were removed from the water and taken into the plant tissue.
Vetiver grass is sturdy, spiky grass native to India that is well known for its use in erosion control. Vetiver grass is also used in perfumes and in handicrafts for local economic development projects. In a somewhat ironic twist given its aromatic properties, vetiver grass is also an up-and-comer in the growing field of phytoremediation, in which plants and wetlands are used to remove contaminants from wastewater and stormwater.

  4. Plans Moving Ahead To Clean Up Knife River
The State of Minnesota is looking to clean up the Knife River.
Since 1998, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) says the waterway has been on a list for excess turbidity.
Currently, state officials are seeking public input in an effort to tackle the problem.
The MPCA says erosion is the primary culprit.
Because of significant eroding soil along the more than 20-mile river, water clarity has become a concern. Experts say excess sediment in a waterway can affect the development of organisms.

  5. Seeds of Despair
KLAMATH FALLS — Dry, bare soil will erode this year if no crop is planted to hold it in place. That much is for sure.
Not much else is. Klamath Basin farmers are still wrestling with questions about cover crops, insurance, and most of all, water.
"It's not every day, but it seems like you think you have everything figured out and then another questions arises," said Mark Trotman of Baley-Trotman Farms.
Trotman has between 1,000 and 1,200 acres to protect from erosion. He's leaning toward planting

  6. Storm water runoff is a drain on Cleveland Metroparks as they battle erosion
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Developed land outside the Cleveland Metroparks has turned the 22,000-acre Emerald Necklace into the region's catch-basin for storm water runoff, damaging park property and costing taxpayers millions of dollars each year.
The runoff also is accelerating the erosion of hundreds of miles of waterways within the parks system, flushing as much as 45,000 tons of silt out into Lake Erie each year.

  8. Returning Trees, Jobs to Haiti's Eroded Hills
Clearing land for farming remains the main cause of deforestation worldwide, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. But in Haiti, the loss of tree cover - and the soil erosion that results - has made it much harder for farmers to grow food, worsening the hunger and poverty already gripping the country.

  9. Atrazine saves the soil
As people around the world recognize Earth Day, it’s also a good time to recognize the vital role the herbicide atrazine plays in protecting the environment and promoting responsible land stewardship. Besides helping to effectively and affordably control a broad spectrum of weeds, atrazine is essential to conservation tillage and no-till systems in agriculture that can reduce soil erosion by up to 90 percent, when compared to intensive tillage.

  10. Conservation Legacy Reaches Back to 1935
April 27th marks the 75th anniversary of the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Established by Congress in 1935 as the Soil Conservation Service, NRCS has expanded to become a conservation leader for all natural resources, ensuring private lands are conserved, restored and more resilient to environmental challenges.
In Nevada, over 9 million acres of land are privately-owned, making stewardship by private landowners absolutely critical to the health of our environment,” said Bruce Petersen, state conservationist for the NRCS in Nevada. “We work closely with private landowners as well as federal land managing agencies, Tribal governments, local and state agencies to make sure the land will be protected for another 75 years.”

Lake Tahoe is one of the deepest and clearest high altitude lakes in the world. It is considered a national treasure, yet its famed clarity has decreased from an average of over 100 feet in 1968 to about 70 feet in 2007. This decrease is attributed to nonpoint source pollution from development of property in the lake's watershed.
