Uses of Vegetative Measures for Erosion

"Good job and it's a great resource."

The Convention on Wetlands
The Convention on Wetlands

" is an intergovernmental treaty which provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.
Wetlands, rather unpoetically called "the kidneys of the land," control erosion through their water–storage capabilities. Wetlands regulate water levels, absorbing and reducing floodwater."

Sediment Management
www.ErosionControlForum.com is an information centre providing erosion answers designed to reduce slope & shoreline erosion, stormwater runoff & soil pollution with:

• information on soil erosion& the largest polluter in our watersheds, sediment deposition .
Most of this "dirt" is the result of poorly maintained erosion control measures on active construction sites.
By most accounts, the lion's share of environmentally dangerous periods of development is the initial construction phase when land is cleared of vegetation & graded to create a proper surface for construction.
Stormwater runoff washes tonnes of toxic materials into streams that stress fish and wreak havoc on ecosystems.
Runoff from development is the leading cause for the pollution and flooding that damage property, contaminate drinking water and impairs commnity uses of local brooks, lakes and ponds.
Biological Erosion Control Methods use vegetative and natural materials for stabilization and protection. Biological techniques rely on plant materials as the main structural elements in a shoreline protection system. Biological shore protection techniques are comprised of living and/or organic materials, such as native grasses, sedges and forbs; live stakes and posts; jute netting; and coir fiber rolls and mats. All materials used in biological shore protection techniques must be biodegradable.
Wind erosion physically removes from the field the most fertile portion of the soil. Some soil from damaged land enters suspension & becomes part of the atmospheric dust load. Dust obscures visibility & pollutes the air & water

• erosion products You will un–earth devices that represent extensive field testing by hydraulic & erosion control laboratories. They provide the latest performance data for rolled & spray–on erosion control & re–vegetation products involved in the design & planning for future conservation & remediation.
"Short–term solutions only put a bigger price tag out there and push it into the future."(Schregardus, 2008)

• erosion resources You can explore a broad range of remedial action programs & environmental contracting services
Develop comprehensive site–specific Remedial Action Plans (RAPs) designed to achieve compliance
Provides a "one stop shop" of relevant environmental information which can be used as a basis for decision–making

via these erosion solutions.

Centralized altogether in a single location – right on your desktop– your eLibrary of information on soil erosion & sediment control is dedicated to providing an industry marketplace & network resource for preventing soil contamination by sedimentation resulting in storm water contaminating river, land & ocean alike.

State of soil erosion
In the world, due to cause such as soil erosion, etc. soil degradation is aggravating in some areas, becoming a global environmental issue. It is said that this phenomenon possibly will cause an extinction of fertile farmland covering about one billion four thousand million ha for twenty years from now on

» As part of its role as a global leader in the field of soil science, NRCS recently released a Spanish version of the 10th Edition of the Keys to Soil Taxonomy. According to NRCS leadership, this will expand the horizons of U.S. Soil Taxonomy by having professionals in all parts of the world applying and interpreting the system in a more uniform and consistent way.
» MLRA Explorer – A new web–based mapping tool that provides the user with the ability to search by Major Land Resource Areas (MLRA) and Land Resource Areas (LRR) using a variety of geographic and attribute questions that create customized maps of narrative descriptions and photos. It also provides the user with the ability to print and/or export specific subsets of the USDA Agriculture Handbook 296.
» eb Soil Survey is now better than ever! Originally launched in August 2005, the improved and enhanced version is now available online. Based on user comments, new features and enhancements have been developed to make the program more responsive to its growing customer base. Some new features include a location marker, floating map unit descriptions, transparency layers, a topographic map layer, and the ability to create custom soil resource reports.
» A website has been developed to assist National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS) soil scientists and their supervisors in identifying training opportunities and resources. Links are provided for schedules, course descriptions, job aids to supplement training, and other helpful topics. GIS–related training includes: (1) GIS fundamentals for all soil scientists; (2) a recommended sequence of GIS–related training, especially for newly hired soil scientists; and (3) training for employees of all soil survey–related offices.

" Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution generally results from land runoff, atmospheric deposition, drainage, or seepage of contaminants. Major sources of nonpoint pollution include agricultural runoff, runoff from urban areas, and runoff from silvicultural areas. Siltation and nutrients are the pollutants responsible for most of the nonpoint source impacts to the Nation's surface waters. These diffuse sources are often harder to identify, isolate, and control than point sources. As a result, from 1972 to 1987, EPA and the States placed primary focus on addressing the obvious problems due to municipal and industrial point source discharges...."
